S’interroger sur les apports de la Fédération européenne imaginée et perçue dans l’entre-deux-guerres permet de resituer l’aventure européenne, et le combat pour la paix qui en est totalement indissociable, dans une démarche à long terme. La volonté d’unité européenne ne va pas sans la perspective de la paix mais le jeu d’échelle est soit régional soit universel : la paix peut être envisagée à l’échelle européenne mais aussi à l’échelle de la première organisation internationale créée en 1919, la Société des Nations. L’Europe en tant que réalité politique peut donc être appréhendée dans cette période pour tenter un premier état des lieux, des enjeux et des débats qui ont taraudé une partie des élites politiques, économiques ou intellectuelles. On peut ainsi, avant le triomphe des nationalismes et des totalitarismes, mettre en valeur des personnalités qui ont tenté de réfléchir à cette réalité européenne nouvelle dont ils ont été d’infatigables propagandistes. Cette démarche doit permettre d’analyser un certain nombre de questionnements ayant trait à la période de l’entre-deux-guerres, mais aussi aux problèmes à venir après 1945.

Pondering on the ideas and work of the European federation as it was imagined and thought during the interwar years provides us with the perfect material to trace back the European adventure and its intertwined fight for peace in the long run.The desire for European unity is tightly attached to peace and this connection can be considered from two different perspective: either a European perspective or a global perspective including the first international organization born in 1919: the League of Nations. We can contemplate Europe during those years as a political entity and therefore craft a portrait of both the debates and issues which concerned the elites in political, economical and intellectual circles. Even before the actual rise of nationalisms and totalitarisms, we can already shed light on some individuals who were the first to think, design and advocate for this new european realm. Working from this angle might led us to better analyse some of the concerns from the interwar period while also anticipating on some preoccupations from after 1945.
