Abstract 2020/1 p. 42

The Hague Academy of International Law opened its doors on July 14, 1923, some ten years after the adoption of its statutes followed by the war years, some twenty since the launching of the first projects. This means that it is fully in line with the "peace through law" movement of the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. It plays its part in this movement by organizing summer courses, which became famous and which, from the outset, followed the "red thread" of peace in the sense of the Hague conferences and the League of Nations Covenant. The "doctrinal melting pot" that constitutes the Academy participates in the development of international law according to an approach which, attentive to current legal developments, reflects the polymorphism of the notion of peace. Through its development and the diversification of its actions, the Academy’s evolution responds to a mission of promotion of international law as well as its dissemination, to which the United Nations General Assembly, in commending its action, is pleased that the Academy is dedicated.
