Lorsque la Première Guerre mondiale s’acheva, les mentalités étaient prêtes et nombre de promoteurs de l’arbitrage étaient à des postes décisifs pour en porter le développement. Ce furent pourtant des déceptions qui marquèrent la période, mais des déceptions fructueuses : déception de l’arbitrage international, éclipsée par la plus institutionnelle Cour permanente de justice internationale, déception d’une organisation mondiale du commerce, qui accéléra la promotion de l’arbitrage commercial, et déceptions, plus anciennes, pour certains traités de paix, débloquant la naissance d’un arbitrage investissement.

When the First World War ended, mentalities were ready and many of the promoters of arbitration in decisive positions to bring about the development of this peaceful dispute settlement method. The period was eventually rather marked by disappointments, but fruitful ones: disappointment with international arbitration, eclipsed by the more institutional Permanent Court of International Justice, disappointment in the failure of a project of world trade organisation, which accelerated the promotion of commercial arbitration, and (lingering) disappointments with some peace treaties, unblocking the birth of investment arbitration.
